Let me start from the beginning.

Kairi is my Other. She's very good friends with Sora, and she's also a Princess of Heart. That basically means that there is absolutely no darkness in her heart-- it's purely light. Normally when people lose their hearts, it returns to the darkness, thus creating a Heartless.

But there was no darkness for such a pure heart to go to. Instead, Kairi's heart fled to a safe place: Sora. Her actual body remained in a comatose state. When Sora realized this, he knew that the only way to return Kairi's heart would be to release his own. So with a Keyblade designed to unlock hearts, he stabbed himself with it.

Both of us were born at that moment.

Is the difference really just a willingness like that?

Not just that. If that were the case, the original six members of the Organization would have went through the same thing. It's the reason that he did it, the need to save someone that he loved even if it meant sacrificing himself.
